300 Bernese Mountain Dog Names: Swiss, Mountain & Classic
The best Bernese Mountain Dog names usually nod to the breed’s Swiss home, its big size or its black, rust and white coat. Below you’ll find exactly 300 names in 15 themes, from Swiss cantons and Alpine peaks to classic and popular picks. Where a name has a fact behind it, we’ve added a short note and a source.
The breed is named for the Canton of Bern, according to the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America’s FAQ sheet, so Swiss names are a natural place to start. Names without a note are simply ideas we like; we haven’t attached meanings we can’t back up. To learn more about the breed itself, see our complete Bernese Mountain Dog breed guide.
How to choose from these Bernese Mountain Dog names
AKC’s guide to choosing a dog’s name offers a few simple tests. Run your favorites through them before you decide.
- Keep it short. Short names are easier to hear over noise and quicker to call in an emergency. AKC says two-syllable names ending in a vowel let you change your tone.
- Avoid sound-alikes. Skip names that sound like common cues such as sit or no, or like the name of a family member or another pet.
- Think about strangers. A name that suggests danger can make people wary of a large dog, so pick one you’re happy to shout at the park.
- Test it. Try a name for a few days and see if your puppy perks up when you say it.
Once you choose, teach it as a game: say the name happily, then reward your puppy for looking at you. Our guide to Bernese puppy training covers the first weeks at home.
Call name vs registered name
If your puppy will be AKC-registered, it gets a formal registered name too. AKC’s naming rules allow up to 50 characters, and names over 36 characters cost extra. You can’t use a breed name alone, words like “champion,” “kennel,” “male” or “female,” or another breeder’s registered kennel name without permission.
Your call name, the one you use every day, has no such rules. Many owners pick a long registered name and a short call name.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good Swiss name for a Bernese Mountain Dog?
Swiss place names work well: Bern, Basel, Zermatt, Lugano or Jura. You could also choose a peak like Jungfrau or Dufour, or a food like Raclette or Rosti. The breed takes its name from the Canton of Bern.
What are popular names for female Bernese Mountain Dogs?
No source ranks names by breed. Across all dogs, AKC's 2025 top 10 for girls was Luna, Bella, Daisy, Lucy, Ruby, Willow, Maggie, Penny, Nova and Sadie.
What are popular names for male Bernese Mountain Dogs?
Again, no source ranks names by breed. AKC's 2025 top 10 for boys was Max, Hank, Teddy, Cooper, Gus, Bear, Duke, Maverick, Charlie and Finn. Bear suits a Berner well, since a bear is Bern's heraldic animal.
How long should a dog's name be?
Short is best for everyday use. AKC says short names are easier to hear and quicker to call, and two-syllable names ending in a vowel let you vary your tone.
Can I change my Berner's name later?
Your dog can learn a new call name with steady practice, per AKC. Changing an AKC registered name has stricter rules, including consent from the litter owner in some cases.
